If you are the spouse of an active duty military member, and you wonder how you might make ends meet if you survive your spouse, there is an important question to ask.

Has your servicemember spouse elected the "Spousal Benefit Plan" for his/her military retirement account?  This provision allows for payments to be made to a spouse in the event of the servicemember's death.

One possible reason your spouse might not have elected for this plan is the fact that he/she will receive more money in payments while serving if the Spousal Benefit Plan isn't chosen.  Be sure to make note of this important policy.
